This tutorial isn't something that I probably couldn't tell you or any other pixel artist but I felt that for you beginners out there, this tutorial would come in handy. I snagged this little baby from this link here (http://pixel.oceansdream.net/?p=415). It is a nice image showing the process of creating something, in this case, a bookshelf.
As you can see from this image, the artist wanted to make a tiling bookshelf which would be usable in RPG Maker 2000. He first set his palette of all the colors he would like in the image. This helps keep you from having to go to the color swatch every time you need to find the color you need. He then mad a visual of the autotile section that will contain his bookshelf, giving himself full view of which tiles will be non-tileable and which will tile. This itself helps a pixel artist begin his work. You can get an idea of how the process goes from there on your own, but I found this guide to be very nice and might be helpful to you new spriters. Keep in mind this is for a 16x16 tile based game so you will have to adapt for anything more. Please visit the owner's blog to view even more great tutorials.
